Racing Tips - Hill Climbs

These are tips from our drivers with regards to different types of racing,  please be aware that these tips are written from the point of view of driving a Toyota MR2,  but many of the techniques will apply to other vehicles,  particularly rear wheel drive ones.  Also note we cannot be held responsible for any damages,  injury,  death or other consequences of using or misusing the information contained here (or on any other part of our website).  This information is for use at your own risk,  and you must assume full responsibility for it.

Hillclimbs

Hillclimbs tend to be much faster than other events,  or at least as fast as an autocross.  This combined with large drops and steep inclines can make for some very hazardous driving.  Remember,  "in order to finish first,  first you must finish".  Many hillclimbs are held on gravel roads,  remember when you're driving on these that while they are not as slippery as grass you still don't have the traction available on tarmac.  It is very easy to lock up your wheels on gravel,  or to cause them to slide sideways.  Try to drive in the visible wheel ruts where the gravel is shallow,  and avoid going to fast to start with as you may not be able to slow down by braking.  Whenever you do brake,  pulse braking is a good idea,  and all braking should be done in a straight line.   If you get into trouble on a gravel road,  and braking isn't working (or got you into trouble in the first place) you can try turning the wheel slightly and applying quarter throttle - then hope for the best.  Although it's not a requirment to compete,  we don't recommend driving in hillclimbs without a roll cage.  Another good idea is to get rally tyres for your car when competing in this type of event,  these will give you better traction on gravel roads - just make sure your club allows you to use the tyres you buy.
